It comes as a great surprise to many people shopping for a new or used piano, that the vast majority of the world's finest instruments were produced right here in America. The period spanning from the 1890's until about 1940 is widely referred to the "Golden age" of piano manufacture. Pianos were produced utilizing the finest materials, and skilled craftsman created beautiful art cases with stunning veneers.

Many of these pianos are still with us today, some restored, but most languishing in dilapidated condition. At Aardvark Piano Restorations, it is possible to completely restore these historical gems to perfection. You may choose from our current stock of restored and unrestored Grands or have your own family heirloom rebuilt.

We begin with a complete inspection of the instrument and formulate a plan which will satisfy your musical expectations while at the same time fall within your budget. A complete restoration is a serious undertaking and may take four to six months and require over four hundred hours of highly skilled labor. A good place to start would be a tour of our shop where the entire process can be described in detail, several pianos can be viewed at various stages of completion and a video can be viewed which outlines the restoration process.

Beginning with our refinishing artisans, the case is restored to your specifications using only the finest materials; veneers are matched as closely as possible to the original and modern finishes are applied to insure a lifetime of visual pleasure. Whenever possible, the ivory keytops are restored and polished. The cast iron plate is removed, stripped then carefully rebronzed while the soundboard and bridges are sanded, repaired and refinished to their original luster. The pinblock is always replaced to insure a lifetime of durability, and the strings we use are the finest; the same as those found on today's Steinways. The piano action is removed, parts are reconditioned, rebuilt, or replaced as needed, hammers are always replaced, and the entire assembly is regulated to the manufacturer's specifications.
